Creating DICOM Web Viewers

Create DICOM web viewers of images or cine runs for referrals, conferences and teaching purposes.

Getting Started:

Note:  This requires a version of FP Image updated on 06/10/2001 or later.  Download the latest version if needed..
 

  1. Using Windows Explorer,  Create a new folder ( i.e.   C:\DicomWeb ).
  2. Start the FP Image Viewer.
  3. Load in a series of Dicom Cine files (or Open a Dicom CD).
  4. From the menu select  [ Process | Load New Script ].  Open the  dicom2web.imp  script file located in the \fpimage\scripts  folder.
  5. Click  No  to the  " FTP transfer to remote host? "  question.  Click here  for information on publishing to a remote web site.
  6. Using the Browse for Folders dialog,  select the folder created in step 1.
  7. Enter the next sub folder number.  Individual study web pages will be written into these folders.
  8. Enter the Jpeg quality for still images and thumbnail images.
  9. Choose whether you want to produce compressed or uncompressed AVI movies (Only used in X-Ray Angiography).
  10. Choose whether you want to include the patient and study information in the final web viewer page and master index.
  11. Click Yes to save the above settings.
  12. Enter a short description for this study. This will appear in the master index comments field.
  13. If you are processing X-Ray Angiography files and you chose compression in step 9, then wait for the first cine run to load in.  At this time you may select a codec and quality.  For best results use the Indeo 5 codec.  If you do not have this codec installed,  Click here to Download   and follow the installation instructions.
  14. The Web Viewer pages will now be created for each cine run selected in step 3.
  15. After the pages have been created,  the master index will be updated.  This is the directory.html  file located in the Cine Web folder created in step 1.


After the above steps have been performed,  subsequent studies may be converted by loading in new image sets and clicking on the Run Current Script  button.  Click  Yes  to accept the current settings.  The web pages will be constructed and the master index updated.
 



Viewing the studies with your web browser:
  Note: If using Internet Explorer,  click right on the image to select the pause/play options.  Other methods may be required if video plugins are installed.
 



Publishing DICOM Web Viewers:

You can upload web pages residing on your computer using a program such as  FTP Explorer   or you can automate the process so that these files will be transferred when after they are created.  If you are not familiar with web publishing techniques,  ask your webmaster or system administrator for assistance during the initial setup session.

  1. Before starting,  ensure that your computer is on-line.  If you are using a dial-up network then establish a connection before proceeding.  It is recommended that you test your FTP configuration first by uploading an image using the  [ Files | Save Image(s) As ]  menu option and select FTP upload.
  2. Using a program such as Telnet or  FTP Explorer,  Create a new directory on your web server  ( i.e.  public_html/dicomweb ).
  3. In the FP Image Viewer load in an image set and run the  dicom2web  script.
  4. Click  No  to the  " Use Previous Settings? "  question.
  5. Click  Yes  to the  " FTP transfer to remote host? "  question.
  6. Unless previously successfully configured,  click  Yes  to the  " Change FTP Account? "  question.
  7. The following dialog input box will appear:
  1. Enter the path to the directory created in step 2 and click OK.   ( Note:  These are usually case sensitive )
  2. The next dialog input box will appear:
  1. Enter the base filename for the master index directory and click OK.  The script will add the  ".html"  extension.  This will be the location for the master index page  (i.e.  www.yoursite.com/dicomweb/dicomwebdir.html ).
  2. Enter the next sub folder number.  Individual study web pages will be written into these folders (i.e.  public_html/dicomweb/00001 ).
  3. Enter the Jpeg compression quality, and then select the AVI compression and Patient Info options.
  4. Enter the title for the master index page banner.
  5. Enter the description for the set of images in step 2.
  6. If you have not configured your FTP account info in step 1,  the following dialog input box will appear:
  1. Enter the host name, user ID and password for your FTP account.  Check the  'Save Password'  box when finished.
  2. If all the parameters are correct,  the script will continue execution and the web files will be created,  uploaded and master index updated.
After the above steps have been performed,  subsequent studies may be converted by loading in new image sets and running the the script again.  Click  Yes  to accept the current settings.  The web pages will be constructed,  the master index updated and the files uploaded to your web site.
 



Frequently Asked Questions
 

How can I optimize the  W/L settings for each run in a series?
    Before starting the dicom2 web process,   Select the Auto W/L option.  The  W/L  for each run may be adjusted at this time.  When the web pages are created they will reflect these settings.
 

How can I select a separate or new Cine Web folder?
    After starting the dicom2 web script click No  to the  Use Previous Settings   question.  You may select another folder at this time.

Can these be published on a web site?
    You can create the same master index and viewer for your web site.  You will need to set up your FTP account info.  You will also need to create your target base directory using a program such as FTP Explorer.
